Ant Enoch Ignites The Fire With Debut ‘Television’

Sending us some Antipodean optimism and retro analogue warmth to counteract this cold-spell, Sydney artist Ant Enoch is on a sunny road to his debut EP.

Introducing his unique concoction of vivid lo-fi pop on his debut single, Television. Enoch combines what he dubs his bare essentials of a piano, vintage drum machine, and slice-of-life vocals with great emotional granularity and places himself smack-bang in the middle of Berlin’s blossoming DIY scene, amidst kindred spirits Okay Kaya, Lover Buffet, and The Zenmenn.

Centred around the true story of watching a friend’s house burn down on the news, Enoch felt inspired to juxtapose this unprecedented experience through music, telling the tale through a journeying melody, upbeat energy and comforting production. It’s an interesting first impression from the Aussie solo-artist, but a good one, as it captures a rare ability of maintaining that emotional connection to a personal, underdog story, but doing so in a way that brings colour to the ear. Catchy but undeniably composed pop can be hard to pinpoint, yet it is something Enoch has delivered rather flawlessly.

An artist that is “forever writing the songbook for life’s big-hearted moments”, the debut project was a happenstance of lockdown, where he spent weeks alone making music after hours in an empty industrial precinct. Fully brought to fruition in collaboration with his tight-knit Berlin community, including co-producers Georgia Potter of Moreton and Riverside Studios resident engineer Julia Borelli (Anyma, Christian Löffler), Enoch explains:

“This song was born out of a very intense writing experience. Seeing myself write 100 songs in 10 days. ‘Television’ began as a small idea, no. 54 of 100. Then Georgia and I expanded on the story itself. We wanted to paint a vivid picture of the underdog. A clear triumphant song that saw people choosing to carry on and choose love as the way through hardship. We started with a basic drum machine pattern and wrote the entire song with the piano, vocals and drum machine. Myka Wallace (drums) came and added that superhuman swagger, furthering the humanity of the song.”

With ten years of performance and touring experience already under his belt from gigging alongside his band Caravãna Sun, Ant Enoch’s intriguing DIY spirit and talent for storytelling kicks off a very exciting solo venture.

“Bound with a wistful charm, ‘Television’ is a quiet but commanding display of Ant Enoch as a solo talent, that we are very excited to see evolve”
