Interview with Tangashima

I work with a guy named Amplif1ed on all my projects, he’s my producer. I come from listening to a lot of lofi, rock, punk, and grunge, which I think adds a lot to my stuff and helps differentiate me from the rest a little

Where are you based?
I’m based in Florida, it’s a little hot but it’s alright haha.

How long have you been making music?
I’ve been making music for a while, if I had to say when I started it was probably around 2019, but I really only got serious about it around 2021 which is when I started working on my first real project, HOPE TO SEE THE SUN.

What genre would you consider your music to be?
I’d consider my music to be rap, for at least right now. I love all kinds of music and I really want to be able to experience making all kinds of music and I’m really looking forward to trying out some genres I love, like rock or r&b for example.

What inspired you to pursue a career in music?
Wow that’s harder of a question than it seems to be, I’m not really sure what’s inspired a career in music for me, if I had to be honest. I think I was just inspired by watching my hero’s, which are almost all musicians. Seeing these artists make and perform art, and see them be so emotional over their own work resonated with me. I think less of being a musician of a career, even though you can live off it, I view it more of you becoming and being a personal museum and opening yourself up to the world. It takes strength to do that, and I think that strength inspired me to really commit to music and letting other people hear it.

What are your biggest musical influences?
Oh man, that’s almost a harder question. I don’t really pick my style up from my inspirations, but I do actually have a few when I really think about it. Twenty One Pilots, Tyler the Creator, Billie Eillish, Paris Texas, JID, Pink Floyd, Quadeca, and my duo partner Amplif1ed all come to mind when I think of inspirations. Although I don’t really treat my inspirations as templates as what I should do, but rather people who do what they do that I like, which inspires me to do what I do.

Are you signed to a label or are you an independent artist?
Well, me and my partner Amp aren’t really signed to a label, but we have our own “label” we publish under called MAC Records. The “MAC” stands for something but I think we’re going to keep that a secret haha.

What have been the biggest challenges in your music career?
Honestly, I think my biggest challenge has been confronting a lot of what I write about. Right now, I’m working on a trilogy of projects that tell a story of mental illness and my struggles with my own mental illnesses, and confronting a lot of that and having to turn a lot of the unspoken into writing is a lot harder than it may sound haha. But another challenge has been marketing, I don’t really know how to do that haha, so that’s for helping me out with that.

How many songs or albums have you released to date?
I’ve released two EP’s, one called “HOPE TO SEE THE SUN” and the other called “the FALL” – HTSTS has 9 tracks and is 18 minutes while the FALL is 7 tracks and 12 minutes. Personally, I think HTSTS is a better project and honestly feels more balanced compared to the FALL. I was trying something different for that second project hahaha.

Can you tell us a few things about your latest release?
I made my latest release, the single Daddy’s Money, when I was super angry at somebody and I just wanted to get it out of my system. It’s a sampled beat, with some really cool vocal effects sprinkled in certain places, from a production point of view. But it came after someone was coming at me saying that I only have nice things because my dad pays for everything I have, cause I don’t make great money and he does – and I talk about my dad a lot, he’s an inspiration for everything I do in my life. So this song was really me saying that even if that was the case, I’d still be better than that person and able to start and win a fight against them. So i guess it’s a pretty angry song haha.

Any plans for new music or upcoming projects we should know about?
I have some pretty massive plans for new stuff, but I gotta stick to one thing at a time or I get super distracted working on everything and never end up getting anything done hahaha. But this next project coming out is gonna have Dadd’y Money and a new single I’m putting out in called “In Defense” on it, and it’s going to be some of the best stuff I’ve ever even thought of making on it. This project has been more than a year in the making at this point, and I’m really looking forward to being able to put it out. This project should come out before June, or at least around there, but that new single In Defense is coming out March 15th!
