After signing a new deal with record label New West Records, Nada Surf have announced their long-awaited new album, Moon Mirror, set for release on September 13th. This 11-track collection was crafted by the band alongside Ian Laughton (known for his work with Supergrass and Ash) and was recorded at the iconic Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire, Wales. Moon Mirror signifies Nada Surf’s return after a four-year hiatus and commemorates the 30th anniversary of their debut single, “The Plan” / “Telescope.”
Alongside the album announcement, the band have also unveiled the lead single – ‘In Front Of Me Now’, a heartfelt reminder not simply to go through the motions in life. Lead singer Matthew Caws reflects on missed opportunities throughout the track, questioning why he wasn’t fully engaged in the present moment. In the chorus, he makes a vow to focus on the task at hand and live in the moment.
Caws says:
Every time we make an album, I’m asked (and ask myself) what it’s about. I never know how to answer that question. I’m still trying to figure everything out, and that’s probably as close to a theme as there is. Looking back over the years, I know what our songs are about in theory: trying to reach acceptance (of circumstances, of oneself, of others), connection, a constant search for possibility and the bright side, a willingness to change, forgiveness, curiosity, checking in with one’s mortality, motivations and judgements, etc. But in the moment when making one up, I have no idea what I’m doing and maybe that’s ok. I’m just trying to stay honest with myself and take my best guess at making sense of the world.
Known for their captivating live performances, Nada Surf have also revealed the initial dates for their 2024 Moon Mirror global tour. The tour will kick off on October 2nd in Washington, DC, with a special performance at the When We Were Young Festival in Las Vegas, where they will play their beloved album Let Go from 2002 in its entirety. Joining them on the US tour will be their fellow New West labelmates, the highly praised indie-rock band Office Dog from New Zealand. The European leg of the tour is set to begin on November 14th in Madrid. Check out the tour dates below, with more to come.
