With Dark Matter, Sister Ghost gives us a tantalizing preview of her highly anticipated debut album Beyond The Water. The track emits a lush, evocative sound steeped in 80s influences like Simple Minds and Tears for Fears. The vocals do their thing. I fancy how the chorus spins around and around.
Penned after watching the queer film Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Dark Matter deals with Sister Ghost’s experiences as a young queer woman from rural Ireland. There’s an emotion of sadness that runs through throughout as she sings lines like “my love, she glows in the fire” (delivered in French).
