Following Tour With Paul Weller, Brighton Risers Barbara Shine On ‘Property-Owning Democracy’

Brighton’s baroque-alternative-pop duo, Barbara, consisting of brothers Henry and John Tydeman, have released their infectious new single, ‘Property-Owning Democracy’. Drawing influences from Glam Pop to Broadway, Barbara’s music is a delightful blend of classic and contemporary, with a literary and intellectual flair that sets them apart in the pop landscape.

Barbara’s sound is a unique fusion of vintage and modern pop, characterized by vibrant melodies and a theatrical touch. Produced by the renowned Paul Steel, ‘Property-Owning Democracy’ explores the pressing issue of financial struggles faced by many today. The song addresses the irony of hard work and education in the face of diminishing economic returns, all wrapped up in catchy, toe-tapping tunes.

Showcasing Barbara’s instantly recognisable songwriting approach, infused with a glittering 70s influence that flows through their buoyant instrumentation and uplifting melodies. The track features bright organs, tight shuffling drums, swelling synths, and dappled strings, creating a quirky aura that’s both charming and striking. Its T-Rex-esque chord progressions and Mika-esque pop radiance bring together the song’s nostalgic and contemporary elements perfectly.

In discussing the track, Barbara explains, “We know that the cost of living and inflation really aren’t very sexy things to write a pop song about… But we like a challenge! And it seemed to us that given this is an issue so many people have faced in recent years—their money being worth less and struggling to get by no matter how hard they’ve worked or studied or saved or whatever it is—that we thought it would make for a relatable theme for a song. We love songs that tell stories, and so we have tried to do the same thing here; there’s a character in ‘Property-Owning Democracy’ who I think people might recognize, perhaps in themselves or in someone they know. It’s quite a sad story really, about someone who can’t help running out of money in spite of all their hard work.”

Barbara’s work is infused with the satirical spirit of Harold Pinter, George Orwell, and Ray Davies, which complements their uniquely American-influenced sound. They have previously supported The Divine Comedy and Haircut One Hundred on tour, and their music has been featured on national TV shows such as “Gone Fishing with Mortimer & Whitehouse.” In April 2024, they had the prestigious opportunity to support Paul Weller on his UK tour. With a glowing reputation and growing momentum, Barbara heads into 2024 with more milestones on the horizon, continuing to captivate audiences with their vibrant and infectious music.
