100%WET are redefining indie rock with their atmospheric “hypergaze” sound. Blending the dreamlike quality of shoegaze with the rhythmic intensity of ’90s breakbeats, drum’n’bass, and a nostalgic touch of vaporwave, their music creates a captivating sonic experience. ‘Ether,’ their second single on Crunchy Frog Records, showcases their unique style, featuring the haunting vocals of Swedish guest vocalist Eir, adding an ethereal dimension to the track.
Propelled by a rhythmic blend of baggy breakbeats and acid-tinged basslines, ‘Ether’ is a sonic journey through states of altered consciousness. The track’s reverb-soaked shoegaze guitars create a dreamy atmosphere, while Eir’s ethereal vocals express the bittersweet emotions of euphoria and detachment: ‘I don’t know how to connect / Lost in disarray / I don’t know how to connect / So I disconnect.’
On the creation of the track, the duo state
Ether was built from a loop on an analogue 303 synth known from 90’s acid house/rave culture. We gradually kept on adding, re-writing or removing different layers and sections throughout multiple iterations of the song. After we recorded vocals with Sanna (Eir), it became more clear to us that the song was asking us to embrace a more carefree or ‘over the top’ vibe that we also like from hyperpop, while still maintaining our love for loud and layered guitars.
With ‘Ether,’ Jakob Birch and Casper Munns delve deeper into their experimental sound, blending introspection with explosive energy. The track reflects on the blurred lines between euphoria and detachment, a theme mirrored in the single’s evocative artwork.
