Kentish singer-songwriter-guitarist Evan Williams revealed his new single ‘Ride On’ today ahead of his hotly awaited debut album ‘The View From Halfway Down’, set for release on April 11th via Peter Doherty’s Strap Originals.
Champion of the alternative, Evan shared the unexpected inspiration behind the western-influenced track:
I heard fragments of this song in a dream after a heavy night. It was the theme for the opening sequence of an old western movie starring Ice-Cube. I woke up humming this melody, and the phrase ‘He was out there in the city eating western takeaways’ going round my head. I wrote the rest of the track in a few minutes.
‘Ride On’ follows the success of previous singles from the upcoming album, including crowd-pleaser “The Doghouse” and “I’ll Stick Around”, which featured on Apple Music’s Matt Wilkinson’s Hidden Gems of 2022. Describing it as the coming of age record, Evan reflected:
It’s a documentation of my stumbling first steps into adulthood. It’s about how it feels to try and make a life for yourself in a crumbling industry and an increasingly uncertain future.
‘The View From Halfway Down’ was recorded at The Albion Rooms in Margate and produced by Jason Stafford (The Libertines and Jamie T). Across 10 songs the album delves into themes of love, loss, self-loathing, addiction… and Bojack Horseman.
