Liverpool’s Courting today unveiled ‘After You,’ the second single from their eagerly awaited third album, Lust for Life, Or: ‘How To Thread The Needle And Come Out The Other Side To Tell The Story’, slated for release on March 14th via Lower Third.
Following the atmospheric ‘Pause At You,’ ‘After You’ further unveils the layered world of Lust for Life…. These tracks form a compelling pair, linked by a shared sonic DNA that permeates the entire album. Both songs utilise synth-driven styles and evoke feelings of anxiety and paranoia. While ‘Pause At You’ bursts with frenetic energy and dance-punk grooves, ‘After You’ amplifies the tension, delivering a visceral, hard-hitting intensity.
Of the single, frontman Sean Murphy O’Neill states,
‘After You’ was the first song that we wrote for Lust for Life. It is an exercise in direct songwriting, an attempt to create something very straightforward. We wanted the wall of guitars and the drums to feel almost hypnotic. A lot of the album is about the idea of duality, and lyrically – the song can be read in either a stalkerish voice or a romantic voice. It’s all up to you.
Lust for Life… signifies a bold evolution for Courting. Known for fusing raw indie anthems with experimental boundaries, the album distils its creativity into eight meticulously crafted tracks to leave an immediate impact.
The album’s duality is evident in the first two singles. Building upon the anxious energy of “Pause At You,” “After You” distinguishes itself with a driving rhythm section and immersive production, cultivating a pervasive unease that lingers. The track embodies the album’s essence, particularly through the poignant lyric: “Can we split off in groups of two?”
