J.E.S.S. has a protest song for the current times. With the darkness of the new presidential administration in the United States, and lots of anti-LGBTQ laws, this song comes at the perfect time. “abomination nation” is a noisy punk rock banger that is built for headbanging. It’s an excellent expression of rage. It’s cathartic in all the right ways, ways that are truly needed right now. It’s important for those of us who are oppressed to express the feelings of anger that we have towards the government and not bottle it all up. Music is an excellent way to do that.
J.E.S.S. says, “It’s a song about rage. The collective rage of all oppressed peoples, a result of continuous abuse and oppression under the hands of corrupt leaders. Who would rather do anything and everything they can to uphold the capitalist system and to fill their own pockets, rather than taking care of and protecting its land and people.”
Chaotic guitars, that twist and dive in great distortion, drive that rage home. The song also calls us all to act now, and rise up against corporate greed and the oppressors that be. It’s time to take the power back. Overall, “abomination nation” is an excellent protest song that needs to be heard by all.
“When I first started constructing the song it was actually coming from a place of intense rage with what happening in my personal life, witnessing greed destroying relationships in my family. I didn’t have any lyrics at the time, but as I started writing it morphed into a song about the built up rage I felt in reaction to witnessing all the corruption, oppression, exploitation and violence done unto many by our government and those in power.
The title “abombination nation” was inspired by two things that I noticed that the US seems to love and be obsessed with, which is 1) to hate on the the gays and 2) bomb things.
As a member of the LGBTQ+ community and a queer artist, it’s maddening to witness anti-lgbtq legislation and discriminatory policies still being placed against our community, despite how far we’ve come to move towards equality, freedom and feeling accepted in our society. And I am sick and tired of our people being targeted by religious extremism and those who have no business in community leadership. And we are only one of MANY communities suffering from the abuse of those in power.
On of my favorite lines in the song is “we’re one and the same, we just wanna relate in the land of the lame”. Which to me I think we as a people are more alike than different in terms of what we want in life. We all just want to be free, to be able to live without having it constantly feel like someone has their foot on our necks while we are just trying to survive and be. It’s time for change and I think people are finally coming together and opening their eyes that this system never worked for us and we’re done with the abuse. The energy of rebellion and revolution is rising and has become palpable.” – J.E.S.S.
