London-based octet caroline have released “Total Euphoria,” their first new music in three years, showcasing a notable evolution in their sound. The track, released today, reflects the band’s exploration of new technologies and avant-garde production techniques.

“Total Euphoria” features the combined vocals of Jasper Llewellyn and Magdalena McLean, layered over an intricate and dynamic soundscape. The track builds in intensity, incorporating trombone, bass clarinet, and harmonium in successive layers. A dramatic shift occurs as a soaring violin line is abruptly interrupted by a powerful burst of electronic noise, creating a striking sonic contrast. The track concludes with a fusion of the initial instrumental attack and the electronic counterblast, resulting in a cohesive and euphoric sound.

Of the track, the group describe,

The initial idea for this song emerged in 2020, but it felt out of place with our first album’s direction. We kept revisiting it, drawn to its raw, ‘loud’ energy and cyclical rhythms. Over time, we refined the structure, added vocals, and discovered the impact of Jasper and Magda’s unison singing, transforming it into ‘Total Euphoria.

The accompanying music video was directed by Parker Corey, a musician and director from Phoenix, Arizona, known for his work with By Storm (formerly Injury Reserve).

In support of the new release, caroline have announced a UK tour, including a headline performance at Islington Assembly Hall in June. They will also perform at the Rewire Festival in The Hague in early April.
