Glenn Danzig Faces Backlash Over Controversial Merch Featuring Nazi-Linked Symbol

Glenn Danzig (of Misfits) is once again at the center of controversy—this time over merchandise featuring a symbol with ties to Nazi Germany. Fans have taken to social media to criticize the punk and metal icon after spotting a questionable design at his March 29 show at the Kia Forum in the Los Angeles area. The poster, selling for $80 before tax, along with a matching shirt, prominently displays what appears to be the Black Sun symbol.

The Black Sun (also known as the Sonnenrad or Sunwheel) has deep and troubling roots. While it was originally inspired by older European pagan designs, the symbol was appropriated by the Nazis, most notably appearing in the SS headquarters in Wewelsburg Castle. Today, it remains a favored emblem among neo-Nazi and far-right extremist groups, often used as a covert or explicit sign of allegiance to white supremacist ideologies. According to the Anti-Defamation League, it is one of many ancient European symbols that the Nazis repurposed in their quest to craft an idealized “Aryan/Norse” heritage.

In the last 24 hours, multiple Reddit threads across various subreddits have surfaced, sharing images of the controversial merchandise. The artwork features a cartoonish depiction of Danzig himself, scowling and wearing an upside-down cross, standing in front of the Black Sun with clenched fists engulfed in flames. Some fans have also noted that both the shirt and poster appear to glow in the dark, further emphasizing the unsettling imagery.

The backlash has been swift, with fans and critics alike expressing shock and disappointment. Many are questioning whether Danzig was aware of the symbol’s connotations, while others point to his history of provocative statements and imagery, suggesting this may have been intentional. As of now, Danzig has not publicly addressed the controversy.

This isn’t the first time the musician has faced scrutiny for his views and artistic choices, but the use of a symbol so explicitly linked to far-right extremism has led to particularly strong condemnation. Whether this was an act of ignorance, indifference, or deliberate provocation, it’s clear that the inclusion of the Black Sun symbol has alienated a significant portion of his fanbase.

As the conversation continues to unfold online, many are calling for an explanation—or at the very least, accountability—from the musician and his team. Whether or not Danzig responds, this controversy has once again ignited discussions about the responsibility artists have when dealing with historically charged symbols.
