Pillowprince is Wondering: R the Straights OK?

Pillowprince has delivered an indie/alt queer anthem that is as catchy as it is culturally relevant. Their latest track, “R the Straights OK,” takes a laid-back musical approach while tackling the rigid stereotypes and pressures of cis-normative society. Through witty, pointed lyrics like “Why don’t you fix your hair like me?” the song directly questions the expectations placed on queer and trans individuals, all while keeping things playful and engaging.

The accompanying music video elevates the track’s energy even further—it’s totally camp and beautifully portrays some members of the San Francisco Bay Area’s queer and kink community. The video is a beacon of queer joy and resilience. Showcasing kinks such as puppy play, knife play, leather harnesses, fire play, and more, the video revels in uninhibited self-expression. It’s a vibrant, unfiltered celebration of queer love and community, embracing the brightness and diversity of queer and trans identities.

In a time when anti-queer rhetoric and legislation are intensifying, “R the Straights OK” stands as a bold and necessary artistic statement. Pillowprince isn’t just making music; they’re creating anthems of defiance, joy, and self-love. The song’s laid-back yet undeniably infectious nature ensures that its message is heard loud and clear, making it an essential listen for anyone needing a reminder of the power of queer expression.

“‘R the Straights OK’ is a playful dig at homophobia, and the lyrics are some things people have said to us over the years. We wanted to make an unapologetically queer music video that shows some of the beautiful beacons of light in the Bay Area queer and kink community. In a time when we’re actively being targeted, dehumanized, and erased, I think it’s more important than ever to show authentic queer and trans embodiment and joy. I wanted to show something more than what’s deemed respectable enough for corporate rainbow washing. I wanted to show desire dripping with subversion and what it’s like when we’re on our best freak behavior. We live in our own expansive universe where we don’t abide by the rigid rules of acceptability. I want to show that we dissent and that queers have more fun.” – Olivia Lee
