Cork-based band Ways Of Seeing return with their atmospheric yet buoyant new single ‘Idolise’ taken from their highly anticipated sophomore album, The Inheritance of Fear. This latest release showcases the band’s signature blend of shoegaze and alt-rock, delivering an immersive and textured sound that continues to elevate their growing reputation.
Produced by Christian Best (Susan O’Neill, Mick Flannery, O Emperor) with additional production and mixing by Daniel Fox of Gilla Band (Sprints, Lambrini Girls, Silverbacks), ‘Idolise’ builds an intricate sonic landscape. The track marks a notable evolution for Ways Of Seeing, embracing a rawer, darker, and more foreboding energy compared to their debut album, End Comes To Light.
Driven by an uptempo rhythm section, pulsing bass, and intricate guitar work that oscillates between fuzzy lead lines and shimmering, modulation-tinged verses, ‘Idolis’ creates a danceable yet deeply emotive atmosphere. The commanding, theatrical vocals add to the track’s haunting yet subtly hook-laden quality, making it an arresting listen from start to finish.
Speaking on the song’s themes, the band explains: “This song explores the dangers of idolisation in a relationship or any other realm of society for that matter. It has the potential to lead to a loss of identity, a power imbalance, and the hindrance of growth. Putting anyone on a pedestal means there is a good chance that you might miss the red flags attached, which can lead to an unravelling into chaos and destruction. Sometimes only seeing the good in something or someone can tear you apart more than acknowledging and tackling the messy parts of life.”
The ethos of Ways Of Seeing is rooted in the idea that songs can reveal hidden aspects of the self—an uncovering of what may otherwise go unseen. The Inheritance of Fear delves into personal, political, and universal themes, employing allegorical lyricism and expansive soundscapes to provide listeners with a fresh perspective on the human experience.
With performances alongside Cork legends Frank and Walters and headline shows at esteemed venues like Mike the Pies (Listowel, Kerry) and Whelan’s (Dublin), Ways Of Seeing have solidified their presence in Ireland’s alternative music scene. Prior to forming the band, its members played in Hush War Cry, alongside Eoin French, who later gained recognition as TALOS. Now poised for a breakout year, Ways Of Seeing are set to make a significant impact in 2025 with the release of The Inheritance of Fear.
