Liverpool’s rising art-rock outfit STR^NGE return with their most honest and emotionally charged single yet, ‘Crying Shame’. The track signals a striking shift in direction for the band, known for their fuzz-driven, high-energy sound. This time, STR^NGE opt for something more theatrical and vulnerable—stripping things back to reveal a raw, intimate side of their artistry.
Produced by Amelia Danby (Kempston Street Studios) with co-production from Chris Taylor (Miles Kane, The Coral, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds), ‘Crying Shame’ blends sombre piano and lush string arrangements with haunting lyricism, drawing clear influence from the likes of Nick Cave and Tom Waits. The result is a slow-burning, cinematic ballad that highlights lead vocalist James’ most personal songwriting to date.
Speaking candidly about the inspiration behind the track, James shares:
“Crying Shame is about my time in university where I became addicted to drugs. I felt terribly down and filled my days with heroin, ketamine and benzodiazepines, and it’s a wonder that I was able to write this song at all; and each line is rooted in reality.
I knew that the track had to have contrast, so punctuating those lyrics with a waltzing time signature felt like the most natural thing to do. I didn’t want to lose the emotional effect of the song through the contrast however, so adding that sweeping string section really keeps the vibe of the tune grounded and doesn’t let it give way to the ridiculous.”
STR^NGE is made up of Chrissy (formerly of The Mysterines), James, David, and Leon. Drawing from iconic influences such as David Bowie and Talking Heads, the band carve out a sound that feels familiar yet forward-thinking. Their live reputation continues to grow, with sold-out headline shows in Liverpool, a standout set headlining the ‘Joy’ stage at Future Now Festival, and support slots for acts like Demob Happy at the Arts Club.
