Newcastle Upon Tyne jazz trailblazers Knats have released a new single titled “Take a Seat on the Settee” today, marking another bold step in their ascent within the UK music landscape. The new song comes on the heels of an incendiary year for the band, which includes releasing their critically acclaimed debut album via Gearbox Records (home to acts like Abdullah Ibrahim and Elliot Galvin). Their busy schedule also featured high-profile support slots alongside Geordie Greep (black midi) and serving as the backing band for R&B legend Eddie Chacon on UK tours. Knats also played a sold-out Jazz Refreshed headliner, supported Str4ta at a sold-out Jazz Cafe, and showcased their skills at the prestigious BBC Proms, further proving that this jazz powerhouse quintet (and the scene in Newcastle) is not to be overlooked.
This latest track, “Take a Seat on the Settee,” sees the quintet collaborating with local Geordie noise-rock pals lots of hands, and once again highlights the impressive scope of their compositional chops. Written by Knats’ Stanley Elvis Woodward, the single is a tongue-in-cheek, genre-fluid piece that expertly combines elements of warped orchestral art-rock with harmonic ideas from composers like Satie and Shoenburg. The result is something equal parts surreal and seductive, as warbled vocals dance around explosive horn and sax breakouts, uncanny keys, hazy guitar lines, and deceptively intricate drums. Of the single’s storyline, Stanley Elvis Woodward explains
it details a lad telling his mam about all the naughty stuff he did when he was younger.
The release follows a recent collaboration with Mike Keat of The Cuban Brothers and Simon Bartholomew of The Brand New Heavies, titled “Beauty & The Beast (Peace),” underscoring Knats’ commitment to diverse and expansive musical partnerships.
