The long-running and reliably fantastic project of guitar-pop extraordinary Ben Cook, now operating simply as GUV, has officially returned with the announcement of his upcoming album, Warmer Than Gold, set to arrive on January 30th via Run For Cover Records. Following the praised lead single “Let Your Hands Go,” Cook today shared the project’s effervescent title track.
“Warmer Than Gold” immediately showcases the blend of untouchable hooks, danceable beats, and swirling guitar textures that define this latest chapter. The record features an impressive, cross-genre cast of contributors, including James Matthew Seven, Darcy Baylis, Hatchie, and Meg Mills of Turnstile, signalling an ambitious shift in scope.
The resulting album is a relentless burst of musical motion, effortlessly achieving a cohesive synthesis of Britpop, baggy, classic indie pop, and first-wave shoegaze through Cook’s distinct lens. The work is deeply personal, with its roots tracing back to his childhood split between Toronto and England. Cook, who previously released music under Young Guv, explained the streamlining of his moniker:
“I’m not so young anymore, three letter band names are cool, and I’m tired of being mistaken as a rapper.”
Warmer Than Gold is a culmination of his musical journey, presenting a set of songs that may be the most emotionally direct and sonically brilliant work of his career.
