He seems to be trying to survive the heartbreak by avoiding the lonliness that follows breakups by hanging out with another girl, kissing her, while wishing it was his ex, whom he is still in love with.
When he soflty sings, “I didn’t know…You gave me something I can’t find” we know, as the listener, that he is talking about something he can’t find anywhere else, a love that is so rare. “I’ll call you but you don’t have to answer.”
