Gwaed Dives Into Melancholy With ‘Iselder’

Welsh band Gwaed unveil their heart-stirring track, Iselder, presenting a vision that feels dreamy and sombre.

Gwaed – Iselder

Hailing from Gwynedd in North Wales and formed in the mid-2010s, Gwaed draw creative strength from the dramatic landscapes of Eryri. Their music reflects that environment, expansive yet intimate, melancholic yet rich in texture. It’s this contrast that has helped Gwaed carve out a distinct presence within the shoegaze spectrum, pairing sweeping melodies with lyrics that feel personal.

Their 2014 EP Sgerbydau Haf introduced listeners to Gwaed’s signature approach: shimmering layers of guitar fuzz, enveloping soundscapes, and harmonies that blurred the line between vulnerability and grandeur. Themes of identity and introspection ran throughout the project, establishing a foundation that continues to inform their evolution.

Nearly ten years on, Gwaed reemerge with renewed focus through Iselder, a track whose title, translating to “depression” in Welsh, hints at the emotional weight it carries. True to form, Gwaed frame that intensity within their signature shoegaze style, pairing layered guitars with a deeply introspective tone. Although Iselder first arrived in 2020, Gwaed chose to reintroduce the song in 2026, making it available once again across streaming platforms and giving it a second life.

Atmospheric at its core, Iselder expands beyond familiar shoegaze tropes. The guitar work feels airy, allowing space for subtle melodic shifts, while the vocals glide through the mix with understated intensity. The arrangement builds gradually, creating a sense of emotional immersion without overwhelming the listener. Every element works in service of the song’s reflective tone, resulting in a composition that feels highly enticing.

Iselder stands as a layered and compelling composition, carrying a shadowed elegance that draws attention. The track highlights Gwaed’s refined musicianship and thoughtful songwriting, serving as clear evidence of their irrefutable growth as artists.

Gwaed have demonstrated a maturity that comes with experience, all while paying homage to their roots. Combined with a sound that clearly feels their own, the result is Iselder, a work that further defines what this act can achieve and opens the door to many possibilities in their foreseeable future.
