Sam Sample and Benny Hagerty Prove That Opposites Don’t Just Attract, They Write Great Songs

Sam Sample and Benny Hagerty have created something quietly gorgeous with “It Takes Two,” a folk acoustic ballad that captures the beautiful tension of loving someone whose edges don’t quite match yours. The songwriting paints a vivid picture of a specific place and time, grounded in lines like “fly away my darling, you’re a workaholic with an artist soul, and you can’t turn off, and you can’t give up control”, an opening that immediately tells you exactly who these two people are. What makes the song so disarming is its honesty about the effort love requires, “I’m doing my best to let you in, but it goes against my nature, so I’ll just push against it” is the kind of lyric most writers would be too guarded to put in a song. The duet format is perfectly chosen, two voices navigating the push and pull of the lyric in real time, their harmonies feeling less like a production choice and more like the whole point. There’s a romantic ache running through every moment, made visceral in a line like “your tight lips will kill me, asphyxiate my brain,” which somehow manages to be both devastating and deeply tender. The weariness and want in “too old for the games, but I want you” lands with the kind of earned honesty that only comes from real feeling, not performance. The central question the song keeps circling, “Can I get more time with you? Can we make 1 from 2?”, is simple enough to sing and deep enough to sit with long after the last chord fades.
