Efterlo Clings To ‘The Sweater’

The third outing from Efterlo combines lush atmospherics with shadowy electronics and intricate production craft.

Efterlo – Sweater

After the sublime Empty Space and the ethereal Somewhere To Belong, comes Sweater, the third outing from Efterlo (Adam Pickering of The Daydream Club and Jess Matthews of Dirt Bloom).

There is a haunting darkness to ‘Sweater’ that recalls Third-era Portishead or Massive Attack. The fractured vocals resemble a late-night voice note or phone call; there is vulnerability, mystery, and sadness here.  It’s about lost love and that feeling of not being enough, with the shared sweater, the bond that once held you together now lost.

“If I knew how to make it better, you wouldn’t be with her, and I would wear your sweater.” [Efterlo]

Created entirely remotely, the track began with Jess recording fragments of piano and vocal ideas at home, which Adam then transformed into a fully realised piece – producing, arranging and reshaping them into the immersive world of ‘Sweater’. By sampling and reworking Jessica’s vocals, he builds rich, evolving textures that form the sonic backbone of the song. Jess’s lead vocal then sits atop, mirroring the lyrics of heartbreak with fragility and tenderness.

“When you place Sweater alongside the two previous releases, you start to see the genesis of a truly exciting project. Keep your ears tuned to Efterlo.”
