I didn’t expect this one to hit me as hard as it did. Neo Brightwell closes out their album “We Didn’t Survive to Be Quiet” with “We Sang Anyway” and it is the kind of song that stops you completely and makes you sit with it. A warm finger picked acoustic guitar opens things up, folky and intimate and immediately inviting, and then the vocal arrives, tender and emotive and so deeply honest that you feel it before you fully process what is being said. The lyrics speak directly to this moment in America, to the feeling of watching things fall apart around you and choosing to show up anyway, to keep going, to keep creating, to keep finding grace even when everything feels broken. “We sang anyway with broken breath with nothing to say.” “Just to prove we still had grace we sang anyway.” Those lines are going to stay with me for a long time. There is something profoundly powerful about a song this quiet carrying this much weight, and Neo Brightwell pulls it off with such sincerity and such skill that it feels less like a song and more like a lifeline. The album title says it all. We didn’t survive to be quiet. And neither did this song.
