German punk band Paul on Bridges come out swinging on “Kick ’em Out” with snappy snare drums and in your face vocals that grab you immediately and refuse to let go. The acoustic guitars move at a fast and furious folk punk pace, driving the whole track forward with an infectious energy that makes the melody stick from the very first listen, the kind of song you are already singing along to before you have fully learned the words. The emo-tinged vocals add an emotional depth that gives the punk fury real heart, and when the lyrics land they land hard. “We kicked the fascists out” and “gay or trans or pray however you like” are the kind of lines that make you want to raise your fist and feel something real in a world that can feel overwhelmingly numb. The song is a full journey, packed with parts including a guitar solo, its structure shifting and evolving in ways that keep you on your toes, and while there is a lot to grab hold of every single section delivers something worth your attention. Lyrically this is protest music at its most direct and most necessary, saying the things that need to be said with the energy they deserve. Paul on Bridges have made a track that is both an absolute jam and a genuine statement. We need more songs like this one.
