Switzerland’s Mary Middlefield is not here to play it safe and “Take Me as I Am” makes that clear from the very first note. Heavy guitars riff and scream throughout while a seriously impressive bass line carries the track with a momentum that never lets up. The chord progression keeps you on your toes, adventurous and unpredictable in all the right ways. In the verses, Middlefield delivers her truths in a spoken style vocal that leans punk and grunge, raw and unfiltered and completely her own. Then the chorus hits and it is fearless, the kind of hook that lodges itself in your brain immediately. The lyric “I’m not so nice but I’ll be nice to you” is an instant classic, disarming and charming and totally refreshing. At its heart this is a song about falling in love unexpectedly, that overwhelming and confusing bliss of feelings you didn’t see coming and can’t quite explain. The bridge drives that feeling home in the most beautiful way, opening up into something heavenly and euphoric that feels like the emotional peak of the whole song. Mary Middlefield is spilling her whole heart on this track and we are so glad she did.
