Never Rust was born in the wide, windswept quiet of the Scottish west coast. In the summer of 2024, The Daydream Club, AKA Adam and Paula Pickering, took themselves away from everything, hiring a remote cabin overlooking the rugged shoreline with one mission: to write an album.

They gave themselves a week. What they didn’t expect was just how deeply the environment would shape the music. Surrounded by dramatic landscapes and long northern light, they ended up writing an incredible 20 songs, far more than the single album they had planned.

Over the months that followed, they carefully shaped and refined the material, eventually whittling it down to 12 tracks that now make up their forthcoming album Dusk.

The first glimpse of the new album is Never Rust, an indie-rock love song that captures the exhilarating feeling of discovering something and someone extraordinary.

The track blends driving guitars with a nostalgic twist thanks to an old retro Casio keyboard they found in a local charity shop during their stay. The sound instantly resonated with them, and its character became woven into the fabric of the song.

Lyrically, Never Rust is all about the rush and glow of new love. Each verse builds in intensity, both musically and emotionally, creating a sense of momentum that mirrors that early stage of connection when everything feels heightened, hopeful, and overwhelmingly alive.

There’s a raw outpouring of adoration in the words, but also an underlying awareness that what’s unfolding isn’t fleeting, it’s something rare, meaningful, and worth holding onto.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the couple’s own love story, and Never Rust is a fitting personal ode to not only their enduring love but their continued musical creativity.

Musically, Never Rust feels like a return to their more acoustic roots, but this feels new, rich and evolved. The duo’s love of music is evident here; they are masters at absorbing inspiration and making it their own. Never Rust flickers with hope and recalls the joy of The Magic Numbers with the yearning of The National.
