Sports Medicine Remind Us What Rock Is Supposed to Feel Like

Sports Medicine open “I Don’t Care” with a western tinged distorted rhythm guitar and a bright surf rock lead melody dancing on top of it, and from the very first note the song feels like something unfolding in real time, mysterious and exciting in equal measure. The song builds with just the right amount of chaos and rawness, the kind that cannot be manufactured or prompted into existence, and when it explodes into the chorus it delivers exactly what it promised. The tom tom drums are a standout, giving the track a unique, tribal spirit that sets it apart from anything else you will hear this week.

The band put it best themselves: “It’s about our relationship to social media; our dreams; our projections; and our general need to disconnect from all that is fake. Meanwhile, your life is falling apart, your relationships are suffering, your life is also confronting you with the need to change but you can’t or won’t, you just want your life to be better, but it’s also not a big deal because you don’t care. However, underneath all this, there is still a desire for success and validation that will never go away, it has to be managed, wrestled with and contemplated with. That is what this song is about. It’s also just a feel good party song at the same time, like don’t overthink it. It’s fun.”

That balance, between genuine emotional weight and a refusal to take itself too seriously, is exactly what makes “I Don’t Care” work. In a music landscape increasingly shaped by algorithms and artificial everything, Sports Medicine are the genuine article, and this song is proof that real bands making real music are still out there and still thrilling.
