Armed with traditional autochthonous instruments and a deeply reflective narrative, YOLZ invites listeners into an intimate journey of healing and self-discovery with her song Agua de Mayo.
YOLZ – Agua de Mayo
Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and now based in London, Yolanda Yovanna Baez Guillermo, known artistically as YOLZ, is a multi-instrumentalist and interdisciplinary musician. Her sound bridges classical foundations with contemporary textures, creating immersive compositions layered with personal and cultural meaning.
YOLZ began studying music at just seven years old at the Dominican Academy of Music, where she trained in piano and guitar. By the age of nine, she had fallen in love with the violin, an instrument that would shape her artistic direction.
In 2007, she joined the National Conservatory of Music, and by 2010, she was pursuing two bachelor’s degrees, a clear reflection of her hard work ethic. She later continued her postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom, further sharpening her artistry.
Her latest release, ‘Migration From Within’ contains ‘Agua de Mayo’ (Water of May), a song deeply connected to her cultural roots.
The track draws from a Caribbean belief that the first rain of May holds miraculous qualities. In the Dominican Republic, this rainwater is thought to heal skin conditions and spiritually cleanse and shield against negative energy, symbolising renewal, purification, and hope.
The idea for Agua de Mayo came to YOLZ during a restless twilight moment, when uncertainty about her future kept her awake. In that vulnerable state, the song took shape as a personal prayer, a prayer to the universe for guidance during a period of emotional distress.
Staying true to its title and cultural roots, Agua de Mayo opens with a dense wave of sound that surrounds the listener, evoking the sensation of a cleansing rainfall. As the track unfolds, the violin rises above the electronic arrangements, guiding the piece while bringing a clear folkloric presence to the composition.
When the Spanish lyrics enter, the song comes full circle, with lines such as “water of may heal in loneliness, water of may bring me comfort” carried by a delicate rhythm that mimics the soft fall of water droplets.
“Ethereal, mystical, and cathartic, Agua de Mayo stands out for its layered meaning and thoughtful arrangements, where classical foundations meet contemporary production flawlessly.”
Agua de Mayo appears on YOLZ’s latest EP, Migration From Within, a three-track release that approaches migration as a personal, inward transition. Across the project, YOLZ reflects on social contrast, transition, identity, and healing. So, if you enjoyed what you heard here, give that outstanding work a listen.
