Close your eyes and you are already there. The sticky floors, the musty smell, the punks shooting pool in the back, the barstools packed with people who are not ready to go home yet. The last band has left the stage and the night should be winding down but nobody got the memo, and then Old Sparky’s “Closing Time” comes on and suddenly it doesn’t matter because this song was made for exactly this moment. Heavy punk rock with raw gritty vocals hits you immediately, the bass line riffing throughout with a swagger that keeps the energy locked and loaded from the first note to the last. The pacing is relentless and perfect for moshing, the kind of track that turns whatever room it’s playing in into a pit whether anyone planned for it or not. When the gang vocals kick in on the chorus the whole thing transforms into a full blown punk anthem, the kind that makes everyone in the bar sing along whether they know the words or not. “Closing Time” is the title track off Old Sparky’s EP of the same name and it is the perfect closer, a love letter to the end of the night, the last call, and every beautiful chaotic moment that happens right before the lights come on. We never want it to end.
