“Maybe Someday” opens with something that immediately breaks your heart: a voicemail from Desk. Job’s late mother, her voice warm and full of love, completely unaware it would one day become the intro to a song written in her memory. When the vocals finally arrive, the grief hits without warning, and within just a few lines the emotional weight of the track is fully felt. Desk. Job lost his mother to cancer, and he has said it took a long time before he could access those emotions enough to channel them into music, ultimately making the brave choice to use her saved voicemail so that “her voice can carry on even after she’s gone.” The lyrics do not flinch from how grief rewires you entirely, capturing the sleeplessness, the loss of appetite, and the desperate search for meaning in lines like “Can’t picture a day when this would feel okay” and “I can’t describe the way this hurts.” The instrumentation earns every tear, with punchy drums, dreamy and slightly distorted emo guitars, and tender, smooth vocals that carry melodies straight into your chest and refuse to leave. “Maybe Someday” is one of those rare songs that makes you feel less alone in your own grief, and Desk. Job has created something that honors his mother as much as it heals anyone who has ever lost someone they cannot imagine living without.
