“Circus Burning” does not ease you in, it announces itself with a long, spoken word introduction that sets the scene with theatrical flair and lets you know immediately that you are in for something unlike anything you were expecting. From there, a bold horn section takes over, conjuring the unmistakable energy of a circus big top in full swing, larger than life and impossible to look away from. A spooky organ weaves through the track alongside it, pulling the circus atmosphere into darker, stranger territory, somewhere closer to the freak show than the main stage. The sound of an audience clapping runs through the song, making you feel like you are standing in a crowd watching something unfold live right in front of you, part spectator and part participant. Eastern Biological sustain that sense of spectacle from start to finish, keeping the song interesting and unpredictable throughout its entire runtime. “Circus Burning” is a genuine journey, the kind of track that takes you somewhere completely outside of everyday life and deposits you back at the end slightly unsure of what just happened.
