Acoustic Guitar, Big Truth: Mike Wilson’s ‘Public Guillotine’ Is Folk Punk at Its Finest

Mike Wilson is not your average folk punk artist and “Public Guillotine” is not your average protest song. Stripped down to just acoustic guitar and vocals, the song carries the true folk punk spirit in the most honest and direct way possible, no frills, no fuss, just the message delivered straight to your face. Wilson is also known for his stunning stop motion paper animations that bring his lyrics and imagery to life in a way that feels genuinely handcrafted and human, a real breath of fresh air in a world increasingly flooded with soulless AI generated content. The song itself is sharp, funny, and furious all at once, calling out the manufactured outrage machine with lyrics like “have you ever wondered why a trans athlete playing high school basketball is headline news? can you name a single time an immigrant actually stole your job?” It is the kind of writing that makes you laugh and then immediately makes you angry because he is absolutely right. Wilson also drops a stat that stops you in your tracks, that on average it only costs each American $35 a year to fund SNAP benefits and food stamps, reframing the whole conversation about who is actually taking from whom. This is a song about class solidarity, about recognizing that the real enemy is the billionaire class laughing while the rest of us argue about distractions. Mike Wilson is doing important work here and “Public Guillotine” is essential listening and viewing! Tune in:
