seaboi Traces Lust, Rooftop Romance, and Distorted Riffs on “twinkmaxxing”

Montreal singer, keyboardist, and guitarist seaboi arrives with “twinkmaxxing,” an 8-song album that wastes no time announcing an experimental sound that refuses to be boxed into any single genre. From the very first seconds of the record, it is clear that seaboi is operating with a distinct and fully realized artistic vision, one that pulls from rock, pop, and experimental electronic music in equal measure and welds them into something that feels genuinely new. The album is an invitation to dive deep, to follow seaboi through lust and longing, late night romance, and the raw electric charge of human connection, and it rewards every listener who accepts that invitation completely.

Opening track “Micro Attractor” is the perfect introduction to seaboi’s world. Buzzing synths kick the song into gear immediately, building a thick and immersive atmosphere that sets the tone for everything to follow. The song is built around seaboi’s journey through lust, the looking up and looking down, the charged moments before two people finally reach each other, and the writing captures that tension with remarkable precision. A rhythmic delivery layered with autotune drives the track forward, and seaboi plays with that autotune in a way that feels wholly intentional and stylistic rather than cosmetic, bending the technology into a genuine artistic tool. The whole thing moves like a movie soundtrack for cruising and desire, cinematic and propulsive in equal measure, and the moment a halftime section arrives midway through, it lands with the weight of relief. The tempo shift feels like the two lovers finally colliding, the music settling into a state of bliss that mirrors the lyrical journey. “I’m on your bed…” seaboi sings, and the understatement of the line against that lush, swelling sound is what makes it hit so hard. This song is meant to be played loud, and it absolutely should be.

“Highways & Mazes” pulls the record in a different direction entirely, and the contrast is one of the album’s greatest strengths. Here, seaboi’s piano skills take center stage, and the song opens up into a pop rock soundscape drenched in vocal echoes and tape delay that gives the whole track a dreamy, floating quality. The tempo is more relaxed, and that choice feels deliberate, reflecting the contented warmth of the love story the song is telling. seaboi chronicles late nights on rooftops, moped rides through city streets, the feeling of being so wrapped up in someone that time becomes irrelevant, and the music matches every emotional beat of that narrative. “We kissed under a raining sky, and all the lights and colors bursted apart. We stayed all night on your rooftop high, I couldn’t count the minutes I spent in your arms.” It is the kind of lyric writing that stops you cold, the kind of line that earns a replay before the song has even finished. This is seaboi as storyteller at full power, and it is a genuinely gorgeous piece of songwriting.

“Burrowing” closes out the highlighted trio by shifting the sonic palette once more, this time welcoming guitars soaked in distortion into the foreground. The riffs are smooth and confident, winding through a production landscape that also features acoustic guitar and synthesizers layered together in ways that pop music rarely attempts. The interplay between those instruments is the heart of the track, and seaboi navigates that complexity with ease, reeling the listener in through sheer sonic ambition. The production across “Burrowing” is a standout achievement on an album full of them.

“twinkmaxxing” is a bold and thrilling debut statement, and seaboi is absolutely an artist to watch.
