Former The Magic Gang frontman Jack Kaye has made his highly anticipated return to the music scene with the release of his debut solo single, “Dora,” out today via Fascination Street Records. Marking his first new material in six years following the amicable split of his top-20 indie outfit, the track signals a triumphant creative rebirth born from a lengthy period of self-reflection and experimentation. To celebrate the release, Kaye has also announced an intimate headline showcase at London’s iconic George Tavern on September 9th.
“Dora” captures Kaye successfully breaking through a stubborn bout of writer’s block by stepping away from personal introspection and leaning into a rich storytelling mindset. Loosely based on the dynamics of a friend’s relationship, the single effortlessly retains the melodic warmth that defined his previous work while exploring a more mature, liberated sonic direction. The track arrives alongside a charming, nostalgic music video directed by his childhood friend Josh Cray, filmed at a boxing gym Kaye frequented during his youth and featuring a lighthearted cast of family friends and a bubble machine.
Of the single, Jack details,
I had writer’s block for a long time after the band broke up. Wheels were spinning; I was trying to figure out what I was even doing musically. So I decided to take myself out of my own head. I started to write this song, loosely based on a friend’s relationship. Once I got into that storytelling mindset, it became fun again and everything flowed.
The solo venture marks a definitive new chapter for the songwriter, who spent the years following The Magic Gang’s sold-out Camden Roundhouse climax rediscovering his voice outside the confines of a touring rock band. By collaborating with new faces, starting a family, and intentionally stripping away the pressure of the industry, Kaye managed to recapture the sheer joy of making music.
