Ava Brogan is a bona fide pop Princess and much, much more on her new single, ‘Seeing Stars’.
Ava Brogan – Seeing Stars
Ava Brogan hits you with one of the jams of the year. Thumping from the outset, her new single is a pulsating, preening piece of work. Pop sensibilities blend with electroclash vibes and a generous sprinkle of fairy dust to make something that is unforgettable and extremely danceable.
Fantastic energy, indomitable spirit and heaps of attitude, we’re told that Seeing Stars was born for the desire to reimagine Irish folklore into a “queer club fantasy”.
It’s fierce but also feels rather sensual, with stylistic overtones borrowed from Caroline Polachek, a witchy, but also glamorous aesthetic that reminds us of a combination of Bat For Lashes, Karen O & early Florence Welch and the party essence of cult favourite noughties indie dance acts like Simian Mobile Disco and Soulwax.
The self-described “Bimbo Pagan” is seemingly anything but vacuous. She’s a multi-instrumentalist, as well as songwriter and producer with an avid interest in folklore, mythology and legend, and she uses her considerable talents to fuse hyperpop, folk and electro into one, creating a distinctly individualistic sonic identity. She has also been known to incorporate Gaelic into her lyrics, carrying on the tradition of generations of Irish musicians before her and most recently popularised by fellow Belfastians (or Belfasters, if you prefer), the infamous Kneecap.
“Another name to add to the long list of iconic pop princesses. Kylie, Britney, Gaga, Charli, and now, Brogan.”
“I wanted that dark, heavy 2007 club energy because it feels dangerous and transformative,” says the singer. “It’s about that moment when you realise the “beast” society told you to fear is actually the person who will set you free. It’s a fairytale for the gays who can’t find themselves in Celtic mythology.”
