If anyone wondered whether Militarie Gun’s razor sharp hooks would translate to the floor of Brighton’s Chalk, the answer arrived roughly three seconds into their set in a wave of pure, unadulterated energy. The LA band brought their infectious blend of hardcore grit and alt-rock melodicism. It was loud, it was relentless, and it cemented the band as absolute masters of subverting expectations.

The night kicked off with Sydney based trio Shady Nasty, who brought their unique brand of Australian post-punk to the stage. Known for their compelling blend of abrasive energy and moody, genre bending soundscapes, they immediately drew the room in. Their set was deeply atmospheric yet unexpectedly euphoric, striking a perfect balance that captivated the audience.

The crowd was beautifully mellow, soaking in the music and creating a genuinely warm, welcoming ambience. Chalk proved to be the ideal setting for them, its intimate layout and brooding aesthetics perfectly complemented Shady Nasty’s sonic aesthetic. The band’s music effortlessly filled the space, matching the venue’s mood note for note. Ultimately, they served as the perfect opening act for Militarie Gun, setting a perfect tone for the rest of the night.

The anticipation in the room was tangible, but nothing quite prepared us for when Militarie Gun finally took the stage.

They kicked things off with one of their biggest tracks, “God Owes Me Money,” instantly setting the room ablaze. Because this was a no barrier show, the boundary between the band and the audience vanished immediately. Frontman Ian Shelton commanded the room with incredible stage presence, beckoning the crowd to pack in tight. What followed was a collective experience. Fans were huddled together, screaming along to every word, with Shelton even reaching out to hold hands with those in the front row.

As the set progressed, the energy in the room only multiplied, invigorated by the one guy whose persistent stage diving single handedly kicked the adrenaline up a notch. By the time the band wrapped up “Pressure Cooker,” the room was buzzing. A swirling, sweaty mix of moshing, dancing, and bodies flying off the stage.

What made the night so special was the pacing. The band masterfully balanced their slow burn tracks like “Thought You Were Waving” with more energetic tracks like “Do It Faster.”

“Do It Faster” easily took the crown for the loudest crowd response of the night. It was absolute chaos in the best way possible, with the entire room shouting the lyrics in unison whilst people launched through the air.

As tight as they sound on record, Militarie Gun’s live chemistry is on a whole different level. Every member locked in perfectly, creating an infectious, community driven vibe. They finally closed out the night with “B A D I D E A,” leaving the crowd spent but ecstatic.

Ultimately, the night was a chaotic, beautiful mess, the kind of gig that reminds you why you fell in love with live music, bringing the post-hardcore community together for an unforgettable, intimate night.
