Jake Pearson is a singer-songwriter in every sense of the word. Stylistically exemplary, he blends an unmistakably British sound with rootsy American overtones.
Jake Pearson – Muddy Water
Let’s get this out of the way immediately – yes, there’s more than a touch of Let It Be about the chord progression on his newest single Muddy Water, and his vocal style definitely recalls the great Elton John – but, isn’t inspiration and the work that it encourages and fosters worth celebrating?
The tiny, soggy island that Jake comes from – namely, our very own United Kingdom – has produced some of the greatest musical talents the world has ever seen, and I believe there is absolutely nothing wrong with being openly inspired by them and carrying on a tradition that has been carved out by a long line of artists over the years.
Innumerable musicians would not exist – at least as we know them – if it hadn’t been for the work of acts like Messrs McCartney, Lennon and John, and we are eternally grateful for that – and it seems like Jake might be too. There are also touches of comparatively lesser-known Great British writers like Nick Lowe, Richard Hawley and Elvis Costello here.
Anyway, enough about the inspo, let’s talk about the resulting work. Classic piano chords, delicate trills, a steady, no-nonsense backbeat, solid bass guitar, an American-infused lead guitar and a lovely, enchanting vocal timbre all come together to make something that feels timeless and pure.
“Instantly lovable and effortlessly graceful, Muddy Water is anything but vague or unsure. Crystal clear and perfectly self-aware, it’s a classic anthem for modern times.”
