Angel of the Evening – Heroin Blue Light

Angel of the Evening lulls you into a false sense of security on Heroin Blue Light.

Angel of the Evening – Heroin Blue Light

Angel of the Evening hails from the beautiful vistas of Wanaka, New Zealand, creating works of art as scenic and striking as the environment from which they originate. The creative vehicle of singer-songwriter and producer Isis-Joy Duffy-McLeod, it sees her writing from the heart, specifically for your soul.

Floaty and ethereal, her debut single Heroin Blue Light is sparse, stark and special. Coming across like a blend of Lana Del Rey, Cat Power, Jeff Buckley and Nina Simone. Feeling more like a conjuring than a piece of music, it’s full of atmosphere, personality and tension. Somewhat sinister feeling but also overtly soulful and smokey, it’s cinematic and almost spiritual in its scope.

Lyrically, it’s full of vivid imagery that builds striking landscapes around the listener in real time. Lines like “Somewhere far away / In a land where darkness is day / You’ll find me living in decay“ and “surrounded by your setting shadow / with a foreign land for my waking morrow” feel almost transcendental and teleport you to a place far, far away that you certainly don’t want to be,

“Bluesy, folky, sexy and sultry, this has a hell of a lot going for it. As uncomfortable as it is tantalising, Heroin Blue Light is an audible odyssey.”

Sitting on over an album’s worth of unreleased, written original material that will no doubt also be incredibly difficult to categorise but also exceptionally easy to fall in love with, this chanteuse has the world at her feet. Prepare to join them.

Heroin Blue Light is accompanied by a short film (recorded by Isis-Joy’s phone), which you can find on her YouTube channel below.
