South Coast math-rock outfit cowboyy have signed to cult independent label Big Scary Monsters (home to Modern Baseball, Lambrini Girls, and American Football). To mark the occasion, the band announced their new EP, revocder, arriving September 25th, alongside the release of lead single “the chair mountain.”

Following their critically praised debut EP epic the movie, which earned backing from NME, DIY, Dork, and BBC 6 Music, cowboyy return with a record focused on deliberate evolution. Moving away from the lighter, accessible textures of their early work, revocder embraces heavier sounds, chaotic energy, and off-kilter technicality. The EP explores themes of movement, between cities, band lineups, dreams, and reality, balancing intricate precision with unhinged psychedelic math-rock and post-punk grit.

Lead single “the chair mountain” captures this new direction. Frontman Stan Powell conceived the track in a dream during a period of intense artistic pressure, drawing visual inspiration from Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights to create an audio translation of surreal, impossible landscapes. Speaking on the single’s origins, Powell shared:

“‘the chair mountain’ was a song composed within a dream. It was a time where I felt like I was trying to prove something after ‘epic the movie’, which was a very simple, easy to listen to EP. I was trying to write something shocking. It was heavily inspired by the work of Hieronymus Bosch, whose imagery influenced the sound and general style of the song. I wanted to create an audio version of a painting of that nature. Inference works in weird ways. There’s other influences musically that become obvious when pointed out like Don Caballero too and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.”

Layered with heavy pedals, noisy textures, and math-rock influences, “the chair mountain” is available across all major digital streaming platforms now. The revocder EP follows on September 25th via Big Scary Monsters.
