Indie Pop Artist Christian Medice’s Latest, “No Hands”
Opening with a deliciously head-turning bass sliding like floss through your skull, Christian Medice effortlessly oscillates the moment into a danceable yet yearning beat. Glowing memories despite a darkening world, dreamy traces of New York skylines, and killer production straight from his heart, “No Hands” is the aching reprieve of a fleeting and beautiful moment from the back of a bike on the west side.
“Is this a dream
It’s not what it seems
‘Cause this world ain’t set up perfectly for you or me
but we’re wide awake, and something’s changed
I can hear it in your voice when you say…”
“No Hands” wastes no time getting to the point while making itself a very welcome earworm by the time the chorus hits. It’s as much the lyrics as it is the satisfying payoff when the luscious moment in the chorus arrives, much like the moment you throw your hands to the sides without losing balance on the back of a bike. Magic.
Songs like that, those magical interpolations of a preciously brief moment, they don’t come in a box or by routine observations alone. Songs like this are often created with someone who can create that story together, imagined and experienced, as Christian Medice explains:
“Created this song with my good friend and collaborator Jordan Greenwald. He played the initial guitar part for me and I was instantly inspired. The lyrics and story came to me in less than an hour. The song always felt pretty special to me as I lived in New York City at an where I didn’t have a single care about anything. I wasn’t worried about stress or money and everything in the city felt so vibrant and alive.”
He has a line in this song that really got to me: “Carving out every moment as we swerve between the lines.” This was such a suave and fantastic way to hear how this beautiful moment was committed to memory. Furthermore, as a songwriter, it’s a fantastic example in passing of how Christian Medice’s able to zoom out without losing connection to how intimately close he holds the listener.
The weight of the world isn’t nonexistent in this corner of space Christian set aside on “No Hands.” It’s not a trivial disconnection from a truly heavy existence. It’s about being awake in the face of every disappearing second, bravely and meaningfully “dissolving into motion” and leaning into the brief moments where you feel alive. “No Hands” is a snapshot of the bittersweetness of fearing you’ll miss the moment before it’s even over, for everything that it means.
