Irish post-punk outfit M(h)aol have released their fierce new single, “Scam Manifesto,” out now via Merge Records and Tulle. Marking their first new music since their acclaimed record Something Soft, which landed at Number 9 on Pitchfork’s Best Rock Albums list, the track arrives alongside an official music video.
Formed in Dublin, the band, comprising Constance Keane, Jamie Hyland, and Sean Nolan, have carved out a distinctive space in modern post-punk by blending biting rage with humour and empathy. On “Scam Manifesto,” the trio are joined by Pixie Cut Rhythm Orchestra’s Sarah Deegan on backing vocals to confront digital alienation and internal hypocrisy.
Opening up about the raw personal conflict behind the track, drummer and vocalist Constance Keane shared:
‘Scam Manifesto’ is a song I wrote during one of my semi-regular social media breaks. My entire feed was ‘how to lose the last 5 lbs’ and obituaries for people I didn’t know. It’s about the guilt I feel about my own hypocrisy. Publicly, I say that as a woman it’s my right to be as ugly and old as I want and still value myself, while privately I was consistently fixating on a list of things I would change about my appearance. It’s about having one rule for others and another one for yourself.
