AmyJo Doh & The Spangles, the Madrid-based punk rock outfit fronted by British singer-songwriter AmyJo Doherty, have today released their new single ‘It’s a Girl’ through Strap Originals.
The song begins with the familiar absurdity of a gender-reveal party – pink cake, blue cake, “it’s a girl!” – before rapidly opening out into something much bigger: a roll call of women written out of history and a refusal to accept the patterns of silencing that have followed them.
“It’s not about gender,” says Doherty. “It’s about reconnecting with the feminine energy in all of us — compassion, respect, harmony, empathy. Look where all that anger and ‘divide and conquer’ energy has actually gotten us. Enough is enough. The time has come for change, and it starts with each one of us.”
The release also comes with a Spanish-language b-side, Menú del Día, a love letter to the classic dishes and lunchtime chaos of Madrid’s traditional tascas. Everyone, the band insist, is welcome to pull up a chair – except racists and fascists.
The band, known for explosive live shows and a track record that includes touring with The Libertines and AmyJo’s brother Pete Doherty across the UK and Europe, follow their recent UK run with shows in Sevilla (11 September) and Madrid (12 September). The Madrid date is an Amnesty International partnered single launch and held at the DIY punk haunt Sala La Trinchera.
