Following the recent release of her single First Flight To France, which we previously reviewed here, Danish singer-songwriter Carmie returns with Side B Stories, a short collection that brings together her pop-country sound with bolder and more assertive songwriting. Across these six tracks, Carmie opens up about different experiences and stages of her life, resulting in what feels like one of her most expressive and confident releases yet. So, let’s dive in and explore what this new facet has to offer.
Accompanied by an upbeat, foot-tapping rhythm and comfortable guitar work, Safe Space serves as a warm welcome to this short-duration record. Its endearing lyrics and easygoing instrumentation make it a fitting introduction to everything that follows.
Up next, and definitely keeping the uplifting energy going, First Flight To France continues with Carmie’s feel-good pop-country sound, telling the story of two people falling in love at two completely different speeds.
Stranger in the Park slows things down a bit in favor of a more grounded and serene track. Its chill and reflective production further drives the lyrics about Carmie’s first teenage romance, an experience that, while short, definitely left a lasting mark on her.
Taking inspiration from the sharp lyricism of one of her biggest influences, Shania Twain, Carmie delivers Boy, I’m a Woman, where she makes a much-needed wake-up call to men who expect their girlfriends to teach them the basics of cleaning. Alongside its tongue-in-cheek subject matter, the track brings back that delightful pop production, making it one of the catchiest melodies on the EP.
Leaning further into the country side of her music, Reputation to Maintain features those unmistakably lengthy, twangy guitars and characteristic guitar sections of the genre, all while depicting the frustrations and unwritten rules of modern dating.
Ending things with a truly memorable composition, Bleed to Life introduces a solid and well-polished production. Powerful synths blend with the already familiar country guitar work and echoed backing vocals, bringing the EP to a fitting conclusion while also bringing to life one of Carmie’s most requested live tracks.
Side B Stories is a short yet soulful record that exemplifies many of the qualities that make pop-country so appealing, combining accessible melodies with heartfelt songwriting that comes from the soul.
With this new EP, Carmie finds a way to express herself more freely. While she is no stranger to exploring different genres, country has increasingly become a defining part of her sound, and Side B Stories further establishes that direction
