Hallan have announced their long-awaited debut album, What’s a Heaven For?, set for release on 29th January 2027 via their own imprint, Mystery of Things. To mark the announcement, the band have released lead single “Solomon,” an abrasive, dance-infused taste of what’s to come.
Following significant radio backing, including a BBC Maida Vale session for Steve Lamacq, championing from BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders, and an A-list playlisting at BBC 6 Music for previous single “The Colline Gate”, the 12-track debut expands the group’s gritty post-punk roots into new territory. The record merges driving electronics, new wave, art-pop, and club rhythms with lyrics informed by history, philosophy, and religion.
Lead single “Solomon” layers gritty basslines and crunched beats beneath frontman Conor Clements’ reflective vocal delivery. Drawing on the biblical story of King Solomon, the track acts as a commentary on reactionism, misinformation, and the search for truth in modern society.
Unpacking the thematic weight and sonic scope of the new single, Clements explained:
“Solomon felt like the right song to introduce the album because it brings together many different sides of Hallan: the urgency of our older post-punk sound, the dance-driven elements we’ve come to love, and the historical imagery and themes that run through the record. It feels like a bridge between where the band has been and where we’re going.”
He continued regarding the inspiration behind the track:
“The song draws on the story of King Solomon and his famous judgement to look at how we process news and information today. It asks whether taking more time to reflect, rather than immediately reacting, might help us find something closer to the truth.”
Taking its title from Robert Browning’s poem Andrea del Sarto, What’s a Heaven For? draws on thematic encounters with historical and cultural figures ranging from Emperor Nero, Judas Iscariot, and Robert Falcon Scott to Carl Sagan and a Syrian soldier stationed at Hadrian’s Wall.
“Solomon” is available to stream globally now. Hallan will release What’s a Heaven For? on January 29th, 2027, with UK and European tour dates expected to be announced imminently.
