On her latest release Sasha Sky laments the traumatic breakup of an oppressive relationship.
Sasha Sky – Close Call
‘Close Call’ is the latest single from Northern singer-songwriter Sasha Sky. The track is the artist’s tenth release following a steady stream of music that began with her debut single ‘Doubts’, a product of the 2021 lockdown.
Characterised by a blend of R&B and soul, Sky’s music is warm, youthful and energetic, complimented by her strong vocal. There are also elements of other genres in her songs, such as indie and hip-hop, but on the most recent tracks, including ‘Close Call’, there has been a definite change in style. Sky has cited American singer-songwriter Bella Kay as a big influence. The songs have become more organic and less pre-occupied with production sheen, taking on a folk sensibility as she wrestles with the fallout and trauma of a past oppressive relationship.
On ‘Last December’ released in February this year, the singer described the song as an “open letter of grief.” That same trauma and heartbreak comes to the surface again in ‘Close Call’, a lament with lyrics that meditate on the pain, anguish and hurt inflicted.
Ironically produced at Heartbreak Studios in North Shields, it is obvious that the singer has dug deep emotionally to sift through the debris of this toxic relationship, the experience affecting her both mentally and physically: “My chest gets tight and Somehow breathing no longer feels right”. With just the backing of an acoustic guitar and electronics providing an ambience rather than an injection of verve, Sky’s voice is front and centre, resolute yet vulnerable but all-encompassing as she bares her soul, trying to make sense of it all: “Why am I left behind in the wreck you made?”
I didn’t think I’d ever get to a point where I was ready to express what happened through music. But those feelings being resurfaced for me in the last couple of months is what inspired me to write again. Close Call was born from that.
It is a powerful song, but a sad song because there is no resolution. Sky describes the experience as “haunting” and how she is “drowning” and just as her voice to the listener is utterly beguiling, she is the one that has been beguiled in its negative sense. The abrupt ending emphasises this lack of resolution and closure and like a nightingale she will sing her song until justice has been served. “Guess I’ll sing/About it/Till they get him.
On Close Call, Sky has channelled her pain into crafting a beautiful folk-based song that uses impactful and poetic lyrics to recount heartbreak, with a voice that leaves you spellbound.
