Spring Term is Your Rainy Day Pick-Me-Up with “Raincoat”

Indie rock artist Spring Term is a bright new pop of color on the Indianapolis music scene. I think I’d forgotten the feeling of being pleasantly caught by surprise in an ever-presently gray world until I had heard their new song, “Raincoat.”

The song starts with a nostalgic, slightly glitching piano that sounds like the sun peeking out and showing its shy face to a longing and chilly world. Cutting in behind are little bursts of percussion dropping like growing rainfall on the ground. As the song progresses, “Raincoat” reveals itself to have a distinctly familiar relationship between heartiness and hopefulness that you find in those unique artists who can turn entire seasons into moments of musical triumph. The rhythm swells to a moment that feels like discovering the joy of dancing in the rain as a kid, no matter how bleak it looks outside.

The song doesn’t shy away from the clouds, as refreshing and comforting as the song itself is. The lyrics feel like a storm-weathered heart that always knows that the sun will cut through the sky again. Through a sanguine touch in the scope of the melancholic, the guitars strum like steady, beautiful drips off the eaves after a night of downpour. They carry a particularly thoughtful message like a steady and sure drip. They pull you closer like the hand of a friend inviting you under their umbrella while walking you home, lending an internal wisdom to bear in mind on darker days:

“While you’re seeking, making, finding, meaning
you can breathe in, always you can breathe
Tuck your knees in, jump into the season,
To the lees, taste the bitter with the sweet
I’ll put on my raincoat
When the rainy day comes
I’ll put on my raincoat
I’ll put on my raincoat”

Just as rich as the contrasting imagery of the song is its chord arrangement. With engaging ease and tension, Spring Term has a way of lifting a gorgeously pensive chord, holding a beautiful weight of the song’s soothing first melodic motions. There’s a simplistic style to the song that grows in its musical journey by the time the track ends, almost akin to the way a person grows their understanding of what it means to weather storms as the seasons rip past us.

“Raincoat” by Spring Term feels like the presence of a moment of calm after the storm, the gentle rainbow noticed for its colors and contemplated for its strangely enchanting spectrum. It reminds me of Michigander and Valley, with a touch of Bon Iver’s innately personalizing nature and immersive sound textures. Truly unarmed and unsure of what to expect upon my first listen, I was genuinely engaged in a way that felt like being held by a new friend that’s trudged through the rain on the same sidewalks I have. And I want to keep walking with them.
