StreetWave Media presents an exclusive interview with pop artist, Scott the Pisces located in London, United Kingdom. After the interview, check out his music linked below…
1. What made you decide to jump into the music industry or music business?
I’ve always been a creative, ever since I was young I’ve been drawn towards music. I picked up a guitar at the age of 8, and never looked back.
2. What do you think makes you stand out from all the other aspiring and upcoming artists in your genre of music?
Attention to detail; perfectionist mentality. I am really meticulous with my music, and in producing / songwriting I have an ear for what sounds good, and what’s not. It goes as deep as shifting words in vocals, or notes in basslines slightly to change the feel. I do everything myself as a DIY artist, and happen to have a good visual eye; I do all my artworks myself.
3. If you could collaborate with ANY artist/band… Who would you choose and why?
Benny Blanco or Max Martin. These two are my inspirations as far as songwriters and producers go, I would be thrilled to even be in the room with them, seeing the interworkings of their processes. They are experts at making pop hits, something I aspire to be one day.
4. What do you think is your biggest Advantage and your biggest Disadvantage about being an Indie artist?
Biggest advantage is the creative freedom and lack of chains holding you down. Biggest disadvantage is purely monetary, we don’t have a massive financial backing like the machine can provide. Sometimes our ideas are far too big for our budgets and that can hold us back. I do think labels and teams have their place, especially in quality control. Sometimes an artist you love all of a sudden drops the worst music you’ve ever heard, and it’s like.. did you not have someone screen this before putting it out? It’s important to have perspective with your music, because its easy to think anything you make is great. I’m very hard on myself as it is, but even I run into the problem of losing objectivity.
5. Do you prefer the Independent route or would you rather sign to a major record label, and why?
I wish I had the opportunity to sign to a major label in the pre social media age. Nowadays it seems like all labels do is find who’s already hot on TikTok, sign a quick deal to exploit that success, and move on to the next act. There’s no artist development anymore, I really wish I could have gone through the whole process from a young age. The independent route is amazing for what you can achieve from the isolation of your bedroom, and in no other time was this possible. It’s great that unknown artists can build passive income from their art.
6. Out of all the songs you’ve released, what do you think is your Best song and why?
Production wise I absolutely love Ocean Blue. There were so many subtle elements in that song that go unnoticed, it’s actually a complex production that sounds so simple. Songwriting, I adore the lyrics for On My Own, Bethany worked magic on that record.
7. Do you miss the era of CD sales OR do you prefer the new wave of music streaming? Explain…
I miss the era of CD sleeves having cool artworks, behind the scenes photos and fan service in them. Those are my earliest memories of music, looking through those sleeves. I do prefer the way streaming has opened up the world of music to anyone, but I also hate how low the bar is because it’s made the scene saturated with subpar music. The album rollout has become throwaway singles which I really dislike. Maybe its the new world, but attention spans are so low that people don’t really sit with songs anymore, it’s on to the next so quickly. In the CD era as a kid you’d only be able to afford maybe one or two CDs, and you’d live with them. The songs that weren’t radio hits would become familiar to you, you’d learn more about the artist.
8. Between creating in the studio OR performing live on stage, which is your most enjoyable one and why?
Performing always gives me a rush of adrenaline that isn’t comparable. I do prefer being in the studio as the creative process is my favourite thing, although it can become tedious as the songs enter their mixing / perfectionist stage. There is a rush of serotonin that you get when an idea clicks, and I live for that in the studio.
9. During your entire journey through the music business, what would you consider your Worst experience?
Performing after someone who’s completely emptied the room. It’s horrible.
10. What would you consider your most successful or proudest moment in your music career, so far?
Having my music used on Love Island, and placed in a movie last year was a proud moment for me. I finally felt like I was recognised in a commercial sense. It was also the first time I ever saw real money from my creations, and the potential I have for more.
11. If any, what discourages you the Most about music industry these days?
The rise of AI in music creation. Don’t get me wrong, it’s so cool that you can type a prompt and generate a full song that sounds amazing, but I hate it. There are people who LOVE this craft, and have spent their lives perfecting their talents… and now someone who’s completely illiterate in music can type a few words, and create a hit. It devalues art. Most people who aren’t creatives wont see the problem, but seriously it’s awful. If we devalue art, and eventually human expression, what’s the point of living?
12. What inspires you the Most about the music industry these days?
There’s a shift in mentality with half baked artists in the zeitgeist. There seems to be a new appreciation for the rare performers who encompass every element of showmanship. People like Usher, Justin Bieber, Chris Brown, Doja Cat. Artists who give real performances. It’s a rare talent these days.
13. If you wasn’t in the music business or industry, what do you think you would be doing with your life instead?
I could have fallen down so many creative paths, I’m great a photography, I used to love acting, so maybe something along those lines.
14. In your own opinion, What is the current music scene like in your local area?
Hopeful, the new generation have shifted from trying to fit in,to experimenting with their art. It’s great to see.
15. What is your latest release and where fans can find it?
My latest single Delusional is available on all streaming platforms now, including the lyric video on YouTube which I created myself.
16. What is on your agenda or what can fans expect to see from you in 2024?
I’m hoping to build my on screen showreel, potentially start vlogging/documenting my life on my YouTube channel.
