Today, North Carolina-based singer, songwriter, and guitarist MJ Lenderman announces his new album, Manning Fireworks, set for release on September 6th via ANTI-. Accompanying the announcement, Lenderman shared the album’s lead single and music video, ‘She’s Leaving You’. The album follows on from last year’s live album, And The Wind (Live and Loose!), and 2022’s breakthrough, Boat Songs.
‘She’s Leaving You’ paints a vivid picture of a middle-aged man navigating a midlife crisis through infidelity, until he ultimately gets caught and heads to Vegas in a rented Ferrari while blasting Clapton. The song also serves as an empowering anthem for any young person who has experienced disappointment from their parents.
The singles accompanying video, an instant classic, was directed by Whitmer Thomas and Clay Tatum. According to the directors, envision a mix of ‘Creed Thanksgiving Half-Time Show’, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, and ‘Drop Dead Gorgeous’.
The album encapsulates feelings of self-doubt, world-weariness, and worry, portrayed with remarkable clarity and attention to detail that evokes the sensation of watching a short film series.
