Nuno Freitas Shines on The Summer of Love

You can’t possibly let summer end without hearing Nuno Freitas’ EP “The Summer of Love.” This poppy EP is full of love and good vibes. Nuno Freitas is from the Portuguese island of Madeira, and is currently based in London. He is influenced by Lana Del Rey, Troye Sivan, The Beach Boys, David Bowie, and Lady Gaga. These influences definitely come through in his work on this EP. Rock the Pigeon is so excited to dive in and explore each track!

The EP opens up with a pop banger called “Peaches.” This song is all about enjoying the beach and peaches from the start of summer. Depending on the listener, the peaches in this song may be interpreted as the male buttocks. This is a laid back song with a catchy chorus hook and awesome synth lines.

Maybe Nuno Freitas got the peach of his dreams. In the next song, we hear all about a transformative summer love experience. The beat slows down and Nuno Freitas expresses his admiration and dedication as he falls in love for the first time. “The Summer of Love” showcases the emotions that follow. This song features a tender vocal delivery, acoustic percussion, beachy music, mushy lyrics, and a horn solo.

“A lot of Summer of Love is about the feelings that summer brings. Whether it’s love, desire, or longing—there are a lot of emotions in these tracks, and I hope that resonates with people.” – Nuno Freitas

A wave of synths sets the tone for “Trust.” This love ballad is about the early days of falling in love. Nuno Freitas is questioning if this love is real and true. He expresses his love throughout the track, wondering if his feelings are lining up with the reality of the situation. He is wondering if she should trust himself and the love interest in his life. He sees all the signs, but are they just games? Overall, he wants to protect his heart from pain. Is this love too good to be true? In the next track, we will find out.

“My favorite song changes almost every day, depending on the mood I’m in. At the moment, it’s probably ‘Trust.’ ‘Trust’ was the last song I made for the EP, but somehow it became one of my favorites. I often catch myself singing the words or humming the melody during the day, especially the chorus. I think it’s probably one of the catchiest. – Nuno Freitas

Next we hear “My Youth” which is the stand-out single from this EP. This ballad features a softly strummed acoustic guitar, adding warmth to this poppy track. He is defending his love and relationship to his friends, who seem to be doubting the validity of the relationship. Freitas’ voice is tender throughout the track. He gets emotional, opening up about his experiences, and expressing how deeply he is falling in love. We hear a lot of personal growth throughout the lyrics. It’s very obvious that the love is true.

All the songs are meaningful to me, but if I had to choose one, it would be ‘My Youth.’ I feel like Fiorenzo (my co-writer) and I created something truly special with that song, capturing the essence of surrendering to love, intimacy, and true connection. –

The next song “Written in the Stars” is about fated love. We hear a shift. He is no longer questioning if the love is true or not. He realizes that all of this was meant to be. Furthermore, he gives an beautiful and emotional vocal delivery throughout the track. On the chorus he confidently sings: “It’s written in the stars, that our paths would be as one, it’s written in the stars, that we can’t help but be in love, it’s written in the stars, and it will never be undone, we can see it, wherever we are, because it’s written in the stars.”

The EP concludes with a fantastic cover song of The Beach Boys song “All I Wanna Do.” The Beach Boys are one of Freitas’ main inspirations, and he does an incredible job with this cover. His voice shines and we get to hear his full range on this track. The performance really shows a deeper layer of talent. This is a great place for the EP to end because this song is more upbeat and has stronger production elements than some of the previous tracks.

“I had the most fun recording ‘All I Wanna Do’, particularly because of the many layers involved. Although the song has a modern Beach Boys vibe, I aimed to replicate their harmonies by recording several vocal takes, and that was fun. I eventually had to stop myself from sending more to Ming (Mingxuan Gao, the producer) because there were just too many. In the end, we kept only a few, which you can hear in the final moments of the song.” – Nuno Freitas
