Czech singer THERA delivers her debut album ‘I Wish I Called’, a vocally calm and collected set, released on ICP Group.
The album reflects a mirror image of hope versus sadness. In terms of artistry, THERA sits somewhere between girl in red and early Billie Eilish. The entire could easily seed on Spotify’s Sad Girl Autumn playlist.
After the opening interlude, “Fate” properly introduces you to the album, its dark but powerful feel will inspire listeners to stand up for themselves, against anything from lies to abuse.
A stand out track is the upbeat “Would You?”, a rock-tinged, pop track which tells the ex that they had their chance, “don’t call me back, don’t text me again, don’t wake me up in the middle of the night”.
A lighter and more commercial vibe can be heard on the uplifting “DLTTI” which takes the listener on a journey about the downside of social media. Sending a good message to teenagers (or younger) how not to be brainwashed by the internet, when social media tells you how to look or act.
The album is filled with downtempo, almost emo-pop gems. “Rain” is about reflecting on the past, for instance when you’re sad, watching the rainfall and working out where things went wrong. The upbeat production tends to turn the lyrics motivational, I’m sure lots will relate.
The piano driven “Stain” is another stand out on the album. A slow, sad number, a modern pop ballad that would touch anyone. It’s about owning up to the mess you have made, while trying to move on after a messy relationship, “now yours are healed, but mine are still bleeding”. It’s saying you’re moving on, but the hurt is still with me.
Perhaps the slowest ballad on the album is actually the most positive and uplifting, “Guardian Angel” is about starting new chapters and closing old ones. Looking to the future and walking away from life’s problems with your guardian Angel.
‘I Wish I Called’ is a serious, reflective and even on occasion depressing album, but its emotionally charged message is relatable to almost everyone. It’s a story, from start to finish. It’s about pain but also hope, life and finding ones happiness and self-esteem. It’s definitely worth listening too, a brilliant debut full length which leaves the listener wanting more from THERA.
