Multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and producer RYAN has released his deeply personal and poignant new single, Summer Nights, a tribute to his late best friend and songwriting partner, Keaton. The song, a blend of acoustic pop and singer-songwriter charm, arrives on the first anniversary of Keaton’s passing, making it a powerful testament to their friendship and creative bond.
Written during the COVID-19 pandemic, Summer Nights was born out of a collaboration between RYAN and Keaton, who was his roommate at the time. Though Keaton had no prior musical experience, he surprised RYAN with his lyrical talent, even penning the entire second verse. The song became a cornerstone of their friendship, a shared expression of their connection.
In July 2023, the duo decided to record the track professionally in Austin, TX. For Keaton, it was a dream come true to witness his creation come to life in a studio, adding his own playful touch by playing the triangle in the song’s final moments. Tragically, Keaton passed away just one month later, leaving the song unfinished.
Despite his grief, RYAN was determined to complete Summer Nights in honor of Keaton. The song now stands as a moving tribute, capturing the joy, pain, and deep connection they shared.
The track’s production is enriched by legendary musicians, including Tommy Taylor on drums (Christopher Cross, Eric Johnson), Mark Andes on bass (Heart, Firefall), and Mark Hallman on Mellotron (Carole King, Oasis), blending RYAN’s acoustic guitar with orchestral elements to create a textured, emotive soundscape.
“Summer Nights is a reminder of a beautiful friendship I was lucky to have. Though there’s pain attached to the song, I can’t help but smile and marvel at what we accomplished,” RYAN shares.
