Anthony Green is back with a brand new folk song that weighs in on the future of American society, titled “Last Summer in America.” We hear a lo-fi acoustic guitar strum to kick off the track. A piano joins in, adding a blanket of warmth. The two instruments set the perfect backdrop for Anthony Green’s voice to take center stage for the rest of the song. He croons in an emotional tone, with poetic lyrics about the depressing future of the United States. With the election just around the corner, this song is highly relatable. In many ways, it feels haunting. Are we headed towards the lyrics in this song? Are we already almost there?
Just like any great protest song, every single word matters. During the last verse, Green gives a nod to Bob Dylan and his song “Maggie’s Farm.” He also gives the Star Spangled Banner a nod, reversing lyrics, to make a statement about the ongoing wars of the world. “The bombs will burst in the rockets’ red glare.”
